Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman, was the third daughter in their family. When she was young the father was a carnival barker, leaving Ruth's mother no option but to work as a cleaning lady and waitress in order to support her family. Ruth was born in a poor area of Boston Massachusetts in which she went to high school. She left school after two short years to pursue acting. The path she chose to take turned out to be strewn with obstacles and in New York, she obtained a job posing for stills in a magazine for crime however, theatrical opportunities eluded her. While in New York, she was employed at a bar, as an entry-point girl, before quitting and moving back to Boston. It was there that she made a buck as an usherette by in the daytime, while at night she performed with the New England Repertory Company. It was her first role as an actor. She earned a bachelor's diploma in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
